How to stay sane if Trump is driving you insane: Advice from a therapist.

“I feel like I’ve lost faith in humanity, in our country, in myself,” a client told me recently. “Is this depression, or is this the election?”

“Good question,” I replied. The truth is, individual psychology is hugely influenced by political realities. Many of us feel insane right now because our world is not sane. Current events are very much at odds with our natural optimism, and our belief in human goodness and progress.

What made us so optimistic in the first place? Our nation was founded on idealistic, positive principles: human worth and dignity, the inevitability of progress, and the goodness of the human collective. Alex de Tocqueville in the early 19th century described Americans’ remarkable optimism with interest. As an article in the Atlantic described in 2015, Americans have maintained our unusually sunny outlook even through our darkest hours. If we have a national ideology, it could be encapsulated in Obama’s farewell address, with the assertion, “I truly believe we are going to be okay.”

From such elevated hope has come a long, hard fall. We find ourselves in a darkening political climate in which corruption, hatred, exclusion, and paranoia are prominent. Many are experiencing despair and anxiety like never before, judging by the increase in calls to suicide and crisis hotlines, and anecdotal reports from therapists. A national trauma, just like a personal (continued...)

Understanding Republican Ideology

Republicans have ideals that are quite opposite from those of Democrats.  Their ideals stem from feelings of fear and anxiety which lead to their need for stability, structure, and answers even to complicated questions. They are modeled after a strict father figure.   The following information is taken from the book  "The ALL NEW Don't Think of an Elephant!: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate" by George Lakoff.

Per Mr. Lakoff, the Republicans adopted this information from the book "Dare to Discipline" by James Dobson.

The strict father model begins with a set of assumptions:

1     The world is a dangerous place, and it always will be, because there is evil out there in the world.

2     The world is also difficult because it is competitive. There will always be winners and losers.

3      There is an absolute right and an absolute wrong.

4     Children are born bad, in the sense that they just want to do what feels good, not what is right. Therefore, they have to be made good.

5    What is needed in this kind of a world is a strong, strict father who can:

• protect the family in the dangerous world,

• support the family in the difficult world

• teach his children right from wrong. What is required of the child is obedience, because the strict father is a moral authority who knows right from wrong. (continued...)

Troutman Independence Day Parade.  June 30, 2018

The Women Democrats participated in the Troutman 4th of July parade on June 30 and everyone who participated had a great time, despite the heat. We had members of the Iredell Democratic party participate with us as well as Kathy Manning's team.  We plan to do more events like this in the future to let the community know that we are present and committed to carrying on the Democratic message to all who are present.

The Race City booth was a huge success, despite the soaring temperatures!  Approximately 20 women who stopped by the booth expressed interest in our group.  Beth Kendall, who is running for County Commissioner, and Beniah McMiller(candidate for NC Senate, District 34),  were available part of the day to introduce themselves and answer questions. A big "Thank You" to Larry McLean for organizing this event as well as all of the volunteers who showed up to help.

NRA PROTEST

MOORESVILLE, NC — One day after thousands of students participated in a nationwide school walkout calling for gun reform, 30 protesters took to the streets in Mooresville to protest a local National Rifle Association fundraiser, "The Friends of the NRA Dinner",  and its "Wall of Guns Raffle".

Democratic Women of Iredell County backed the "March For Our Lives-Iredell" which was held on March 15 outside the Charles Mack Citizen Center in downtown Mooresville.
